Dental Implants

No one likes having a missing tooth or teeth. Missing teeth can make a person feel self-conscious about his or her smile. Whether a patient has lost teeth due to tooth decay, periodontal (gum) disease or injury, cosmetic dentist Dr. Richard Champagne can repair their smile with dental implants. Dental implants are a comfortable, convenient and long-lasting way to correct dental imperfections.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a prosthetic root used in place of a patient's natural tooth root as a foundation for a dental crown, permanent tooth or dentures. Dr. Champagne implants the artificial root into the jawbone, which gradually fuses to the dental implant over time. When topped with a crown, permanent tooth, dental bridge or dentures, dental implants resemble and function like real teeth. With proper care and maintenance, they can last a lifetime.

What to Expect During the Procedure

During the patient's initial office visit, Dr. Champagne tailors a treatment plan to meet the individual needs of each patient. The customized treatment protocol may involve: replacing one missing tooth with a single dental implant and crown; replacing several missing teeth with dental bridges and multiple implants; or replacing all teeth with implant-supported full or partial dentures.

On the day of the procedure, Dr. Champagne administers a local anesthetic before starting the dental implant process, so the patient is completely comfortable. He then surgically implants the artificial root into the jawbone.

Patients who do not have adequate jawbone mass in the upper back area of the mouth to support dental implants may require sinus augmentation prior to receiving dental implants. Dr. Champagne can perform sinus augmentation to raise the sinus floor, enhancing bone mass so implants are properly supported.

Individuals with jawbone deformities that make it difficult to support dental implants may require ridge augmentation. Dr. Champagne performs ridge augmentation by gently lifting the gum off the ridge of the jawbone, revealing the underlying bone deformities. The New Jersey cosmetic dentist then fills in these imperfections with either grafted natural bone or artificial bone material. Once the ridge has been rebuilt, Dr. Champagne can securely position dental implants.

Who Can Benefit From Dental Implants

Nearly anyone! People with loose dentures or tooth loss from periodontal disease or from trauma can benefit. Patients whose teeth are beyond repair can also benefit from dental implants.

How to Care for Dental Implants at Home

Dental implant patients will receive comprehensive instructions about how to care for their implants. In general, however, they should take care of the implants like they would their natural teeth. Those with implants should continue to brush twice a day, floss once a day and rinse their mouth with antiseptic mouth wash. They should also make sure to keep all dental appointments, including regular dental exams and cleanings, so Dr. Champagne can monitor the health of their dental implants.
