Dr. Richard Champagne – New Jersey Teeth Whitening Specialist
Many people indulge in some type of behavior that can stain teeth, such as smoking, or drinking coffee, tea, dark cola or red wine. In addition, even the natural aging process can cause teeth to become dingy over time.
Fortunately for those who are frustrated with grimy, stained teeth and long for a brighter, whiter smile, New Jersey cosmetic dentist Dr. Richard Champagne offers in-office teeth whitening treatment. The bleaching system lightens stains on tooth dentin and enamel. Just one hour of treatment can lighten teeth up to eight shades lighter!
How Teeth Whitening Works
Teeth whitening treatment lightens stains on tooth dentin and enamel without harming the overall structure of teeth. During treatment, Dr. Champagne applies tooth whitening gel onto the surface of teeth. Once the gel is applied, he uses a special lamp to activate the most important ingredient in the tooth whitening gel — hydrogen peroxide — causing it to break down and release oxygen molecules in the process. In turn, the oxygen molecules penetrate the stains on the tooth dentin and enamel, thus lightening bothersome discolorations.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Before administering teeth whitening treatment to a patient, Dr. Champagne examines his or her teeth and gums to ensure sound oral health. The New Jersey dentist also reviews the patient's aesthetic goals, oral hygiene practices and lifestyle habits to determine if in-office teeth whitening treatment is right for the patient.
For best results, Dr. Champagne may advise patients to undergo a thorough teeth cleaning prior to beginning teeth whitening treatment.
The entire procedure takes about one hour. To prepare the treatment area, Dr. Champagne places a cover over the patient's lips and gums, leaving teeth exposed. He applies the whitening gel to the teeth. Then, the patient relaxes while the chair-side lamp is used to activate the gel's hydrogen peroxide.
Dr. Champagne applies a fresh layer of whitening gel to teeth every 15 minutes during the procedure. Once the treatment is finished, the dentist applies fluoride gel onto teeth to help decrease sensitivity. Patients receive a touch-up kit and instructions about how to care for the treated area to take home with them.
Who Can Have This Treatment?
Although the teeth whitening system can effectively lighten teeth, it may not be suitable for everyone. Pregnant women, women who are nursing and children under the age of 16 should not undergo teeth whitening treatment. Also, people with extensive porcelain veneer work, dental fillings or highly sensitive teeth may not make suitable candidates for teeth whitening.
